Does Insurance Cover a Girlfriend’s Abortion?

In most cases, your insurance will not cover your girlfriend’s abortion unless she is legally listed as a dependent on your plan, such as a spouse. If she is not on your policy, she would need to rely on her own insurance or pay out of pocket.

Even when insurance is involved, coverage for abortion services varies widely depending on the plan, provider, and state laws.

What About Medicaid in Missouri?

If your girlfriend has Medicaid, it’s crucial to know that Missouri has specific laws regarding abortion coverage. In general, Missouri Medicaid (MO HealthNet) only covers abortion in very limited circumstances, such as:

  • When the pregnancy is the result of rape
  • When the pregnancy is the result of incest
  • When the life of the mother is at risk

Outside of these situations, abortion is typically not covered under Medicaid in Missouri.

Because laws and coverage can change, checking with your insurance provider will give you definitive answers. Currently, abortion is legal up until fetal viability due to the passage of Amendment 3 in 2024.

Start with Medical Information First

Before focusing only on cost, it’s important for your girlfriend to understand her pregnancy and health.

At Pregnancy Help Center, we provide no-cost pregnancy testing in a private setting. If the test is positive, we offer ultrasounds performed by an RN and a registered sonographer.

An ultrasound can confirm:

  • How far along are you in your pregnancy
  • Whether the pregnancy is developing
  • Where the pregnancy is located

These details are essential, especially when considering next steps. For example, different options may depend on how far along she is, and certain medical conditions require immediate care.
