If you’re thinking about using abortion pills—mifepristone and misoprostol—you must first understand how Missouri law treats their use, what medical risks may arise, and how Pregnancy Help Center can support you.

Medical Consequences: Are the Abortion Pills Safe?

Medical abortion often leads to heavy bleeding—sometimes passing blood clots the size of a lemon—and intense cramping. The FDA advises that women should seek immediate care if they soak through two or more pads per hour for more than two hours, or experience fever, nausea, or vomiting lasting over 24 hours.

A recent report revealed serious safety concerns associated with the abortion pill that women deserve to know about before taking mifepristone. Among other risks, the report shows 10.93 percent of women experience sepsis, infection, hemorrhaging, or another serious adverse event within 45 days following a mifepristone abortion.

Missouri’s Evolving Legal Landscape

Amendment 3—passed in November 2024—restored the availability of abortion up to fetal viability, and clinics began offering services in early 2025. But legal challenges remain, and access to medical abortion continues to be restricted by state regulations and concerns about women’s safety.

Abortion Pill Health Risks from Out-of-State or Online Sources

Obtaining abortion pills via telemedicine or ordering them online may violate Missouri law, even if prescribed elsewhere. In addition to prohibitions in Missouri, the FDA has only approved the use of mifepristone to end very early pregnancies, before 10 weeks. Taking abortion pills after that time can be ineffective and also dangerous to your health.

Why an Ultrasound Matters First

An ultrasound is a vital first step before making any pregnancy decision. An ultrasound can:

  • Confirm whether you are pregnant; it’s possible to get a positive pregnancy test, but naturally miscarry soon after
  • Reveal how far along you are to determine your eligibility for the abortion pill according to FDA guidelines
  • Rule out an ectopic pregnancy, which occurs outside the uterus and requires emergency care

At Pregnancy Help Center, we provide no-cost ultrasounds so you can have the information you need to make a safe and informed choice. We also offer pregnancy testing and options counseling to discuss all possible paths forward.

If you’ve had a positive test or are considering abortion pills, schedule an appointment today. You don’t have to face this decision alone—we are here to help you navigate the medical and legal realities with care and support.

We do not provide or refer for abortion at Pregnancy Help Center.
