What Are the Early Pregnancy Symptoms?
A missed period is usually the first sign of pregnancy, but if your periods are irregular, you may not realize you are pregnant. The Mayo Clinic lists the following as other early symptoms:
- Tender, swollen breasts
- Nausea with or without vomiting
- Increased urination
- Fatigue
- Moodiness
- Cramping
- Food Aversions
Although extremely rare, some women go almost the whole nine months without realizing they are pregnant. They head to the ER with stomach cramps only to find out they’re giving birth! There’s even a name for it: a “cryptic” pregnancy.
How Can I Find Out if I’m Pregnant?
Your first step is to take a pregnancy test. You can either purchase an at-home test or come to Pregnancy Help Center for no-cost pregnancy testing.
Most at-home tests are reliable, but you should follow the instructions carefully. The Cleveland Clinic suggests these steps:
- Check the expiration date.
- Read the directions thoroughly before starting.
- Wait until the first day of your missed period to take the test.
- Test first thing in the morning when your urine is the most concentrated.
- Be sure to wait the recommended amount of time before checking the results.
- Repeat the test in three to five days.
Whether you take a pregnancy test at home and retest at Pregnancy Help Center or take our test first, you can be confident in the results. An RN or other medical professional administers our tests for accuracy.
What Do I Do if the Test is Positive?
You should follow a positive pregnancy test with a limited OB ultrasound. You may wonder why you would need an ultrasound if your period is late and your pregnancy test is positive. An ultrasound provides more information.
For instance, an ultrasound detects if your pregnancy is growing or if you have had a miscarriage. Because it takes a woman’s body time to return to pre-pregnancy hormone levels, it’s possible to get a positive pregnancy test and no longer be pregnant.
An ultrasound also determines how far along you are in your pregnancy and if it’s in the correct location. A pregnancy that implants outside the uterus is called an ectopic pregnancy and can be extremely dangerous.
