Have you decided to place your unborn child for adoption? Adoption is a wonderful gift, but understanding the process can be a bit overwhelming for birth mothers.

Below, you’ll find a summary of what the adoption process involves and how to best navigate all the decisions coming your way.

What Should I Expect?

Birth mothers should expect to work closely with an adoption agency. The adoption agency will act as your advocate and guide you through every step of the adoption process.

As the birth mother, you are in complete control of the entire adoption journey. You will be able to choose the adoptive family who will raise your child as well as the kind of adoption that best fits your wishes and desires.

What Kind of Adoption is Right for Me?

You might be surprised to learn that the adoption process is not one-size-fits-all. As you make an adoption plan for your child, you have the option to choose an open, semi-open, or closed adoption plan.

Open

With an open adoption, you will have unlimited communication between the adoptive family and the child. Your personal information, such as phone number and email, will be shared with the family, and you can be as involved in the child’s life as you wish.

Semi-open

A semi-open adoption allows you to have an ongoing relationship with the child and adoptive family while concealing your private information. The adoption agency will act as your liaison, and all communication between you and the child will occur through the agency.

Closed

While closed adoptions are rare, it can be the right option for some birth mothers. Choosing a closed adoption means you will have little to no contact with the adoptive family and child.

Will I Be Supported?

One of the main concerns in carrying a pregnancy to term is the financial burden that comes along with it. But women who choose adoption are often provided financial assistance for medical bills, maternity clothes, and other expenses by the adoptive family or agency.
