Recently pregnant and considering abortion? It’s common to feel like you need to handle an unplanned pregnancy quickly and quietly, but knowing the facts and risks is important before jumping into an abortion.

Here’s a quick summary of what the abortion pill is, the risks and side effects you may experience, and guidance on making an informed decision about your accidental pregnancy.

What Is The Abortion Pill?

The abortion pill is also known as a medical abortion. A medical abortion uses medication to terminate a pregnancy within the first 10 weeks of gestation.

Women will typically visit a clinic or their doctor and be given an initial dose of mifepristone.  Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone, causing the uterine lining to thin and the growing pregnancy to stop growing.

Around 24-72 hours later, you’ll be instructed to take a misoprostol dose at home. Misoprostol will bring on strong cramping and heavy bleeding. After a few hours to days, the pregnancy will be passed.

Side Effects and Risks

Abortion affects everyone differently. Some women report mild symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, and headaches; others can experience trouble breathing or fainting.

Risks

Serious risks are rare with the abortion pill. However, understanding what’s possible can help you make an informed decision. Documented risks reported from taking the abortion pill include:

  • Incomplete abortion
  • Prolonged and heavy bleeding
  • Infection or sepsis
  • Digestive system discomfort
