If you’ve had an abortion, you may expect pregnancy symptoms to disappear right away. However, many women notice that certain symptoms continue for days or even weeks afterward. If that’s happening to you, it can feel confusing or concerning.

Understanding why symptoms may persist and when to seek medical care can help you feel more confident about your recovery.

Pregnancy Help Center of South County offers no-cost, private pregnancy testing and limited ultrasound services for early pregnancy evaluation, performed by a registered nurse (RN) or trained sonographer. If you have questions about symptoms after an abortion, our medical team can help you better understand what may be happening and when follow-up care is important.

Why Symptoms May Continue

Pregnancy causes significant hormonal changes. After a medical abortion, sometimes called the abortion pill, hormone levels do not return to pre-pregnancy levels immediately. As a result, many women continue to experience pregnancy-related symptoms for a period of time.

Pregnancy hormones such as human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) can remain in the body for days or weeks after an abortion. Because hCG contributes to many pregnancy symptoms, physical changes like nausea or breast tenderness may continue until hormone levels gradually decline.

For many women, symptoms fade over time rather than stopping all at once.

Common Symptoms That May Persist

Some pregnancy-related symptoms may continue temporarily, often for one to two weeks, and in some cases longer, as hormones gradually decline. These may include:

  • Breast tenderness or soreness as hormones adjust
  • Nausea or appetite changes that improve as hCG levels decrease
  • Fatigue while the body recovers physically and hormonally
  • Bleeding and cramping, which may range from light spotting to heavier flow; moderate bleeding can last for several weeks
  • Emotional changes, such as hormonal shifts and personal stress, may contribute to mood swings or increased anxiety

If symptoms remain at the same intensity beyond several weeks, or if a pregnancy test remains positive after four weeks, it may be appropriate to consult a medical provider for evaluation.

When to Seek Medical Care

While some lingering symptoms can be expected, certain warning signs should not be ignored. Seek urgent medical care if you experience:

  • Heavy bleeding (soaking two or more pads per hour for two hours in a row)
  • Severe abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Fever, chills, or foul-smelling discharge
  • Dizziness, fainting, or weakness
  • Ongoing nausea or vomiting
  • Fever: 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, lasting more than 24 hours

These symptoms may indicate complications such as infection or incomplete abortion. If you experience any of these warning signs, it’s important to seek prompt medical care from a licensed healthcare provider or emergency facility.

Follow-Up and Support

Because hCG can remain in the body for weeks, home pregnancy tests may stay positive for a period of time. A medical evaluation can help determine whether recovery is progressing as expected.
