If you’ve recently had unprotected sex, you may be feeling anxious and wondering how soon you can take a pregnancy test.
While it’s natural to want answers right away, the timing of a test makes all the difference in getting an accurate result. You can always schedule a no-cost appointment at Pregnancy Help Center for clinical pregnancy testing and accurate results.
We’ll share more about the ideal timing below.
When Does a Pregnancy Test Work?
Pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which your body produces after a fertilized egg implants in the lining of the uterus. Implantation usually happens about a week after ovulation (this timing varies for each woman).
Because hCG needs time to build up to detectable levels, testing too early could lead to a false-negative result.
The Best Time to Test
You are generally able to receive an accurate urine pregnancy test result at least one day after a missed period. If your cycle is regular, this usually means waiting about two weeks after unprotected sex. If your periods are irregular or you’re unsure, waiting at least three weeks after sex can give you more reliable results.
If your test is negative after your missed period, test again in a couple of days and see if it turns positive or your period arrives.
Can I Test Earlier?
Some early-detection tests claim to provide results a few days before a missed period, but they become more accurate with time. Clearblue’s early detection test is only 77% accurate six days before a missed period.
There’s no harm in using these tests, other than wasting some money if it gives you a negative result, because you’ll want to test again after your missed period.
