How Does A Pregnancy Test Work?
When a woman is pregnant, her body produces the hCG hormone. This pregnancy hormone is produced once a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. It’s designed to help the fetus grow. A positive pregnancy test means hCG was detected in a woman’s urine.
Are At-Home Tests Reliable?
Yes, in most cases, an over-the-counter pregnancy test does provide accurate results. However, women are usually very nervous about taking the test so they may take it too early or not follow the directions carefully.
For instance, if you buy and take the test on the same day, you may not get the most accurate results. It’s best to wait until the next morning when your urine is the most concentrated.
How Early Can I Take A Pregnancy Test?
To get an accurate result, it’s important to wait a few days after your missed period. The hCG hormone needs a few days to build up in your urine.
If your monthly cycle is fairly regular (every 28 to 30 days), you can probably take a pregnancy test the day after your missed period. If your periods are irregular, it’s best to wait at least a week after.
It’s always best to get a second opinion whenever you take an at-home test. Your test result is confidential and only discussed with you.
